A Midsummer Night's Dream is a charming comedy by W. Shakespeare, well-known from its numerous stage and film adaptations. In the course of one night, the world of real and fairy-tale characters collide, the king Theseus plans a wedding, the capricious king of the elves Oberon wants to punish his consort Titania, and above all, two couples of lovers, entwined by love, wander through the night. And few people notice that at the beginning of the comedy there is a threat - Egeus, Hermia's father, appeals to the king Theseus for his right. If his daughter does not want to marry the man he has chosen for her, he intends to send her to her death. And so it is only a good thing that Oberon and the elf Puck in his service stir up the feelings of Demetrius and Lysander with the help of a magic flower...

Princess Verunka's marriage is to save the kingdom, impoverished as a result of its ruler's crazy ideas. She's not hard up for suitors: there's a talented poet, twins - one a general, the other a composer - as well as a mysterious marquis wielding the magic of his mother Morana, the Queen of Death. Could Ondra, an ordinary youth, desiring to become a rafts man on wild waters, stand a chance in competing with them? At first the game is about Verunka's hand in marriage, but later on the lives of all the kingdom's inhabitants are at stake. This time the path to a happy end will have many curves and turns. But there's also a small wreath floating on the river surface, and carrying a message of love, plus the king's latest invention - so that the end may be happy after all...

The original ballet music by Václav Trojan, based on Shakespeare's fairy tale comedy, was preceded by incidental music for theatre and radio, and in particular the soundtrack to Jiří Trnka's feature-length puppet film A Midsummer Night's Dream.
